Question of the day: In every festival, the Hindu people visit a temple, true or false?

The traditions in India aren’t like we have in Sweden. The biggest religion in India is Hinduism which is far from what we have in Sweden. The most people are atheists in Sweden which mean that they don’t have a religion. We have many traditions like Christmas, Easter, New Year and so on. Many of our traditions are Christian but in the last couple of years it is something we do just to get together with our friends and family. Not many of us know why we celebrate Shrove Tuesday and don’t think about the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas day.

The biggest tradition in India is Diwali which is the Hindu New Year. They doesn’t celebrate Diwali on the last day of the year, they celebrate it in the end of October or the beginning of November. Why they celebrate Diwali depends on where you live. But everybody light up their oil lamps in and outside their house. They give each other gifts and they set of fireworks. So New Year and Diwali have one thing in common, the fireworks.

The Swedish and Indian traditions aren’t similar at all and this is because we don’t have the same religion. The most people in India believe in hundreds of Gods while most of us in Sweden believe in none.

The answer to the question:
True:
They visit a temple, eat special food and give each other gifts.

That sounds interesting that they have like New Year in October/ November. In South Africa there are a lots of different traditions because of the big diversity of people with different culture. But one culture that is celebrated by the Afrikaans is braai. It’s a big barbeque party. Almost as the Swedish crayfish party. So just like India they do have some traditions that reminds like a Swedish tradition.

Hi Agnes! I really enjoy reading about your time and experiences in India.

Here in England they are pretty similar with Sweden, the traditions doesn't exists just because of religious reasons. Or well, the christmas is quite much about the Christianity. They celebrate Christmas the most at the 25th of december, the day Jesus was born.

I guess they have traditions like carnivals also? Because here in England we have the The Notting Hill carnival, which acutally is set up by the West Indian Community. But maybe they're exaggerate the whole thing a bit, I believe the fact that the englishmen like to dress out is a part of the whole thing ;)

The traditions in India seems very interesting! I actually hadn't heard about any of them. I think that it's because we have a different religion than they have. There is not many similarities between the traditions in India and the traditions in the U.S. It's actually a very big difference. None of the traditions you wrote about is celebrated in the U.S.
